Building ‘Munthof’ makes a special appearance in the Reguliersdwarsstraat in Amsterdam. The monumental building consists of a mix of retail, offices and a parking garage now being renovated into its original glory and extended to the design of architects Bos Hofman. During the renovation, the exterior characteristics of the building are restored to the way they were in the years it was designed (1966-1969).
By sacrificing the roof top parking area, the office area can be doubled from two to four floors while an add-on area is developed on top of the building. Respecting its historic appearance, both the municipality of Amsterdam and monument care made clear that any rooftop add-on should not be visible from the Reguliersdwarsstraat. Therefore, the attachment, seen from above, has the shape of an apple skin.
To make this historical monument a sustainable building, new isolating materials and two energy-efficient heat pumps will arrange for heating and cooling through climate ceilings. The renovation is expected to be completed by the end of 2018 providing this majestic mix-use property with an Energy Label A and a BREEAM-NL in USE score Excellent certificate.
